The swamp from the legends

Manchac is the swamp people tell stories about. A century ago, hurricanes wiped whole towns off this shoreline, and locals still talk about the curse of Julia Brown. Today it is miles of towering bald cypress, quiet black water, and wildlife in every direction. The best way to see it is low and slow, from the seat of a kayak, with nothing between you and the swamp.

Why paddle Manchac

  • Gator country. Manchac has some of the best alligator viewing in Louisiana. When it is warm, you will see them, and your guide knows exactly where to look.
  • Silent kayaks, not airboats. No motor, no roar. You glide in quietly, so the wildlife stays put and you actually hear the swamp.
  • A real naturalist guide. History, ecology, and the ghost stories, told by someone who loves this place.
  • Calm and beginner-friendly. Sheltered water, stable kayaks, and an easy pace. If you can sit in a seat, you can do this.

What you will see out there

Alligators sunning on the banks. Herons and egrets working the shallows. Turtles stacked on every log, osprey overhead, and cypress trees that have stood for centuries. We never bait wildlife and we never promise one exact sighting, but Manchac rarely disappoints.

Your two hours on the water

You will paddle through dense cypress forest and open wetland, winding into quiet channels most visitors never see. Your guide keeps an easy pace and stops often to point things out. Plan on about two hours on the water, start to finish.
